Arizona State University Student and U.S. Military Veteran Awarded $2,500 Scholarship

ORLANDO, FL, November 01, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ — Bogin, Munns & Munns awarded its annual Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) scholarship to Allen Hankins. Allen is a current Arizona State University student and U.S. military veteran. He plans to use his $2,500 award to continue his studies in computer science.

Allen grew up battling the challenges of FASD and navigating the foster care system. Because of his medical condition, he suffered developmental delays and learning disabilities and experienced coordination, memory, and attention issues.

After years of neglect and abuse, Child Protective Services (CPS) placed Allen and his siblings in foster care. Despite being separated from his brothers and sister, Allen felt his foster family cared for and understood him, ensuring he received the guidance he needed.

Scholarship Winner Wants to Share His Experience to Inspire Others

With his foster parents’ support, he completed elementary, middle, and high school before joining the military. Accustomed to overcoming challenges, Allen passed basic military training and served in Iraq. He uses the skills he developed in the military in all aspects of his life – including his studies at Arizona State University.

Allen decided to pursue a computer science degree to provide for his family and further his military career. He also aspires to share his experiences with the foster care system as a guest speaker at foster agencies.

Although it presents lifelong difficulties, Allen credits FASD for his current outlook on life. His journey taught him how to overcome challenges, ask for help, and reach for his dreams, no matter the odds against him.
