Year-Long Program Aims to Help Court Employees Sharpen Their Leadership Skills, Prepare for Future Leadership Roles

The Federal Court Leadership Development Program (FCLDP) is offered through the Federal Judicial Center (FJC) in Washington, D.C. Established by Congress in 1967, the FJC is the research and education agency of the judicial branch of the U.S. government. One of the primary goals of the 12-month program is for nonsupervisory staff working in various capacities to develop their leadership knowledge and skills in order to prepare for future leadership roles.
A crucial element of this program is the final project, which involves participants identifying either a federal court outside of their own district or an organization outside of the federal judiciary entirely, wherein leadership can be observed by conducting a site visit to their preferred location.
Participants choosing an organization make their decision based on various factors that fit their unique criteria and the specific leadership skills they would like to attain. Besides gaining valuable insight for their own advancement, they will also be prepared to bring some of these fresh, forward-thinking ideas back to their district within the government sector.
To that end, Exponential Results will host a program participant from February 14-16. Abby Logan, a Courtroom Deputy in the U.S. District Court – District of Wyoming, is one of 70 participants chosen for this nationwide program, which attracted over 300 applicants. Logan works for the Honorable Nancy D. Freudenthal, who in 2010 was confirmed by the United States Senate as the first female judge for the District of Wyoming and was also the former first lady of the state.
Logan will observe and interview Karen Brown, CEO of Exponential Results, along with several members of her staff. She will not only interact with Brown and her staff members individually, but she will also analyze interactions between the two. Logan will also have the opportunity to watch Ms. Brown as she conducts a leadership coaching session with a bellwether Exponential Results client.
Ultimately, the site visit is meant to help Logan observe leadership qualities in action, as they are being taught not only to the staff at Exponential Results but also to firms who enlist the company’s services. Following her visit, Logan, like all the other participants, will produce a comprehensive report detailing several critical items, including why she chose Exponential Results; the leadership lessons she observed during her site visit; and how her interviews and interactions influenced her leadership style and development.
To create the report, Logan will pose questions such as:
• How does Exponential Results develop trust with its employees?
• How does company leadership know they’ve picked the right person for a specific role?
• How do they get buy-in from team members and continue to foster happiness in members’ roles rather than stagnating?
The culmination of the program will be a graduation ceremony for all 70 participants in a location not yet disclosed.
